The Westport Arts Center (WAC) is a nonprofit visual and performing arts organization located in Westport, CT. WAC presents approximately 200 programs annually including contemporary art exhibitions, arts education for children and teens ages 2 -18, and chamber music and jazz concerts. Through art classes, workshops, family programs, school field trips and outreach opportunities, more than 4,000 students experience art each year.
WAC has been a vital cultural force in the community for 49 years and collaborates with dozens of cultural and community organizations in the region. The organization employs full-time and part-time staff members and has an active and committed Board of Directors.

The Westport Arts Center provides opportunities for undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students to undertake a 3-5 month long internship in the areas of: marketing, visual arts, education, and development. The internship program is designed as an educational experience in which interns work directly with a staff mentor on a specific project or projects and acquire professional expertise in areas that match their academic background, professional skills, and career goals.
Length: 3-5 months
Required commitment: 8-30 hours per week (may include evening & weekend events)
Stipend: Internships are unpaid, but can be for university or college credit
Marketing, Communications, and Archiving Internship
The marketing & communications intern will work closely with the Communications Director to develop copy for and/or design flyers, brochures, printed programs, and additional printed and digital materials for the Westport Arts Center. He or she will manage components of the website, emails, photo archive, blogs, and other digital marketing vehicles to promote WAC programs. The intern will be responsible for researching alternative marketing opportunities, creating and analyzing audience surveys, and distributing promotional materials around the area. There is an opportunity to write press releases and develop a portfolio, and contribute to the organization-wide archiving project documenting WAC’s 40-year history.
Requirements: Working or expert knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, strong written and verbal communications skills.
The Development Intern will assist in all areas of arts related fundraising under the supervision of the Development Director. Responsibilities will include assisting in implementation of annual development plan, research, writing, activities in support of event planning and grant writing, filing, preparation of development materials and mailings, administrative tasks, and other duties as assigned. Minimum required commitment of twelve hours per week. Necessary skills include at least one year of college completed, strong writing skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, Microsoft Excel proficiency, attention to detail, and ability to complete assignments in a timely manner. Some database entry experience is preferred.
This is an unpaid internship available immediately for the academic year.
Visual Arts Internship
The Westport Arts Center is an important destination in the region for those interested in contemporary art – where talented, knowledgeable curators have an opportunity to create thoughtful exhibitions with a diverse group of artists. WAC also recognizes and celebrates the abundance of talent in our own communities through an Annual Members Show, juried exhibitions, and the Studio Gallery. Supporting the gallery staff, the visual arts intern will assist with all aspects of exhibition execution, including loan agreements, transportation, installation, and opening receptions. The intern will help create exhibition checklists, manage information from juried and member entry forms, and produce printed gallery materials, such as labels and in-house catalogues. As a part of the visual arts staff, the intern will serve as a knowledgeable ambassador or docent for gallery visitors.
Requirements: A highly motivated and enthusiastic individual, strong interpersonal skills, experience working in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, strong written and verbal communications skills, interest in pursuing a career in visual arts or visual arts administration.
Art Education Internship
The Westport Arts Center provides educational arts experiences for school-aged youth, individuals with disabilities, working artists, and people who love the arts! The arts education intern will participate in helping WAC to fulfill its mission “to create arts experiences that contribute to individual growth and enrich the community,” by assisting in and developing hands-on arts classes, workshops and gallery tours. He or she will also create gallery guides for each exhibition, help run school programs, develop and maintain relationships with local & neighboring organizations, assist in writing grants, and provide administrative support for the education and development departments.
Requirements: Experience in leading youth arts projects, strong writing and public speaking skills, strong phone and computer skills including Microsoft Office, interest in pursuing a career in the field of art or museum education. Graphic design experience a plus.
