Enjoy a day of creativity with your family at Westport Arts Center’s Family Art Day: All About Toys on Sunday, March 20 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Children of all ages and their families are invited to the Westport Arts Center for an immersive artistic experience that will challenge them to create art projects inspired by toys. The gallery will be transformed into multiple project stations where kids can color, build, design and experiment with unusual materials!
Celebrating its 5th year, Family Art Day: All About Toys is a favorite theme of local families where each young artist can choose their favorite project or create as many as they can. This year’s projects include three-dimensional block puzzles, do-it-yourself flying saucers that can fly without batteries or electricity, a printmaking memory game, and an upcycled toy mobile that repurposes old and gently used toy pieces into a new decorative art form. Each project will require kids to problem-solve and think critically about the process of creation in addition to designing a fun and funky finished product.
Westport Arts Center’s Director of Education, Lindsay Heffernan, stated, “The projects and materials provided to kids at Family Art Day invite each child to work in their own style creating projects that are personal to them allowing for self-expression and creativity.”
“Kids will leave with a sense of accomplishment knowing they’ve created something that is all their own,” Heffernan added.
In addition to projects that are ideal for children ages 4 and up, the event will feature a brand new “Tiny Tots” corner with game-based projects for toddlers and preschoolers that emphasizes understanding patterns and using fine motor skills, including the design of colorful spinning tops and unique lacing cards.
Shake Shack of Westport is a sponsor of Family Art Day, and will provide free custard coupons and Shack Sunglasses for youth attendees on a first come, first served basis.
Family Art Day: All About Toys is the culminating event for the 2016 Toy Makers Competition. Finalists in each age group will be interviewed by a panel of judges about their designs before winners are announced.
First place winners in each of three age groups (ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12) will receive a $50 Shake Shack Gift Card, a Boundless Brooklyn Shake Shack Model Kit, and a scholarship to a WAC summer camp of their choice. Second and third place winners in each age group will receive a gift certificate to the Westport Arts Center and a gift basket of toys designed to delight, provided by Learning Express Toys of Westport.
The Competition invites children ages 5-12 to submit original toy designs that are unique, original and imaginative, easy to use and understand, and can be recreated and produced in a real life scenario. Entry fee is $10/child with all entries due by March 12, 2016.
The Westport Arts Center thanks Shake Shack of Westport and Learning Express Toys of Westport for their generous sponsorship of the event.
