This evening series of talks explores the history, theory and dissemination of Venetian art from the mid 1440’s to the middle of the 1500’s. Over a period of 150 years Venice produced a long list of the worlds greatest artists who were responding to its unique geography, its political and social life and its extreme wealth. For the most part we now encounter Venetian art in museums hanging alongside works from different areas, commissioned by different patrons and representing wildly different subject matter. These works have become decontextualized survivors from one of the greatest art periods in Western Art. In four lectures and one museum visit this course seeks to reconstruct the people, places and events that occasioned the creation of these works of art. The course is structured chronologically allowing for an overview of the period as well as discussion of key themes that affected the nature of the art being produced.
FIONA GARLAND earned her MA in Art History from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2011, specializing on the art of Venice. Her passion for art history and the stories it reveals about the artists, their patrons, and society in general has created an avid following for audiences in London and Connecticut. Teaching in a lively and engaging style, she has guided tours of art galleries and churches exploring London, Venice, and Ghent and across North America. Ms Garland is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Fairfield University Arts Museums.
